Freshman Year                                   2022-2023

Prompt :

In what way(s) did you personally grow this year? How did you demonstrate or rebuild the resilience needed to move forward? How will you utilize resources and your support network to hold yourself accountable for continuing this growth?

My first year at university has been an extraordinary journey of personal development and emotional ups and downs. Moving to this beautiful new country on the other side of the world has sparked a range of feelings, including homesickness. However, when I began my first semester, I realized that this new beginning offered several opportunities for personal development, and I was eager to capitalize on them.

Gradually, I started feeling more at ease as I acclimated to the unfamiliar environment, connected with motivated peers, and focused on my personal and academic growth. Connecting with like-minded individuals navigating this new chapter of their lives helped me regain my resilience and provided the encouragement I needed to move forward. Throughout this process, One of the driving forces that held me accountable throughout the year was the thought of the sacrifices my parents made for me. They had invested so much in my education and had unwavering faith in my abilities. Their belief in me motivated me to make them proud and ensured that I never took their support for granted. Their sacrifices served as a constant reminder of the responsibility I had to succeed and fulfill their hopes for my future.

The first semester was a rollercoaster ride of challenges and adjustments. It demanded a great deal of effort and energy, pushing me beyond my comfort zone but it helped me adapt to my new life and find my footing.  By the second semester, I was hitting my stride. I even completed my first Honors experience with flying colors, which brought me a sense of satisfaction and pride.

Throughout high school, I adopted a mindset of prioritizing academics above all else. Being a high-achieving student meant that I often sacrificed my social life, networking opportunities, and even taking breaks to maintain my scholarly standards. However, by the end of the year, I realized that this approach had left me physically and emotionally exhausted leaving me with a valuable lesson about the need for work-life balance.

Moving forward, I want to maintain my high academic standards while also enjoying a vibrant social life. I know it's possible to find that sweet spot where I can excel academically while still having fun and making lasting memories. To ensure accountability, I will utilize the resources available to me, such as academic support services, mentorship programs, and extracurricular activities. Moreover, I will rely on my support network, including friends, family, and faculty members, who will provide guidance and help me stay focused on achieving my personal and academic goals.

To summarize, my freshman year at university was a revolutionary moment of self-discovery and growth. The obstacles, homesickness, and academic pressures tested my resilience, but they also turned me into a more robust and self-assured individual. Armed with the lessons learned and backed by the resources and networks at my disposal, I am dedicated to maintaining my academic standards while embracing a well-rounded university experience.
