Personal Growth Through
Micro-Adventures
My self-designed experience is titled "Personal Growth Through Micro-Adventures." The primary goal was to step out of my comfort zone, foster independence, and build confidence by exploring new and diverse environments. This experience involved completing 12 weekly micro-adventures across California—including urban centers like San Francisco and natural landmarks like Big Sur and Yosemite—as well as taking an international cruise to the Bahamas. Over the course of 10 weeks, I dedicated more than 90 hours to travel, regular check-ins with my mentor, and weekly reflective journaling and social media documentation.

For my self-designed honors experience, I completed a ten-week series of structured "micro-adventures" throughout California, complemented by an international cruise to the Bahamas. The objective was to intentionally step out of routine, build self-reliance, and observe how navigating unfamiliar environments builds confidence, social ease, and independence.
My travels covered a dynamic mix of metropolitan centers and natural landscapes across California:
Urban Exploration: In San Francisco, I navigated the BART system to explore cultural hubs and walk through the open green spaces of Golden Gate Park. I loved the distinct neighborhood atmospheres—from the vibrant murals in the Mission District to the coastal breeze along Ocean Beach. In Oakland and San Jose, I engaged with local food markets and historic public squares, learning how urban layout influences community connection. Later, exploring Santa Monica Beach and the surrounding pockets of Los Angeles highlighted the immense diversity and scale of West Coast transit and culture.
Natural Landscapes: Hiking the steep, wind-swept ridges of Mission Peak Regional Preserve tested my physical endurance and offered stunning panoramic views of the entire East Bay. The dramatic coastal cliffs and crashing waves along the Pacific Coast Highway in Big Sur provided a serene contrast to busy city routines. In Yosemite National Park, trekking through the valley surrounded by granite cliffs and towering waterfalls was truly grounding, reinforcing my appreciation for preserved public lands.
The Bahamas & Caribbean: Stepping beyond my domestic itinerary, I traveled to the Caribbean on a cruise to the Bahamas. Experiencing authentic local cuisine, relaxing along clear turquoise waters, and sharing conversations with warm, welcoming island residents made the trip deeply rejuvenating and broadened my cultural perspective.
This project redefined my understanding of being a Global Citizen Scholar. To me, a Global Citizen Scholar is someone who practices active global awareness, civic engagement, and cross-cultural problem-solving. Navigating transit systems, engaging respectfully with local residents, and adapting quickly to new environments taught me to approach unfamiliar situations with curiosity, resilience, and an open mind.
I selected a curated photo gallery from my travels because it vividly contrasts the diverse spaces I navigated—from dense urban transit hubs and steep mountain trails to international coastlines. Capturing and reflecting on these moments served as a vital tool during my journey, documenting not just the physical locations, but my evolving comfort, adaptability, and personal growth in real time.
